ABOUT SINGAPORE:
Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. Singapore joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent.
Singapore subsequently became one of the world’s most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world’s busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe.
Singapore is an island city-state with a diverse cultural and linguistic heritage and a thriving modern economy. Singapore is a center of global commerce and trade, with one of the world’s most business-friendly economies. With limited natural resources, the success of Singapore is based on its population’s entrepreneurial capabilities and drives to succeed. In 2005, Singapore was host to over 70,000 international students. One of the most important reasons to study in Singapore is that the Singaporean Government is committed to see international education grow, and by 2015 plans to attract 150,000 students.
Singapore has several different levels of higher education: institutes of technical education, polytechnics, universities and private institutions.
Study in Institute of Technical Education, Singapore
The Institute of Technical Education (ITE), Singapore provides two-year courses which lead to a National ITE Certificate. There are three ITE colleges in the country with 12 different locations. Courses offered include business studies, engineering, communications and technology as well as beauty and wellness, creative media and hospitality.
Study in Polytechnics, Singapore
Polytechnics in Singapore provide three-year diploma courses, which can lead to university studies. There are five polytechnics in Singapore:
Nanyang Polytechnic | |
Ngee Ann Polytechnic | |
Republic Polytechnic | |
Singapore Polytechnic
Temasek Polytechnic |
Finally, there are numerous private institutions which operate autonomously and include two arts institutions and more than 300 private commercial, IT, fine arts and language schools. Two quality-assurance bodies in Singapore ensure that private institutions meet student welfare and regulatory standards: the CaseTrust for Education and Singapore Quality Class for Private Education Organizations (SQC-PEO).
Singapore has rolling intakes so you could choose to study in Singapore at a time of your choice.
Fluency in English is required to apply for a student visa to Singapore. The following certificates of English competency are accepted:
GCSE – General Certificate of Secondary Education
TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language
IELTS – International English Language Testing System |
Apart from the English test, the students must have also received their letter of acceptance from the university where they wish to pursue their course of study.
The international and overseas students should ensure that their visa application reaches the ICA at least 2 months before the date of commencement of the course.
Except for applications to certain local polytechnics and to the universities in Singapore, an overseas student needs a local sponsor who is a citizen of Singapore or a Singapore PR above the age of 21 so that he can apply for a student pass.
Normally, it takes four weeks or more to complete the visa processing stage.
All applications must be submitted online through SOLAR at least a month before the intended start day but not more than two months before.
Additional consular information can be obtained from High Commission of Singapore and the Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.
To study in Singapore, you will incur two main costs: tuition and living expenses.
